Is Specialized Foster Parenting for Me?
Begin by honestly answering the following questions:
- Can you love freely and easily?
- Are you secure in yourself and in your parenting abilities?
- Can you set clear expectations and be firm, yet understanding,
in your discipline?
- Are you willing to seek help when the 'right' answers to
a problem are not obvious?
- Do you view bed wetting, lying, disobedience and minor destructiveness
as symptoms of a troubled child?
- Can you love the child who, because of an overwhelming fear
of rejection, cannot love you back?
- Can you tolerate major failures and glory in small successes?
- Can you maintain a positive attitude toward a foster child's
parents even though many of the problems the child is experiencing
relate to their actions?
- Can you help the child to develop a sense of belonging in
your home even though the stay is only temporary?
- Can you function as a team member along with the case manager
and possibly the child's biological parent(s) with the constant
focus of what is best for the child?
- Are you interested in learning on a continuing basis all
you can about being a foster parent?
- Can you love with all your heart, and then let go?
If you can say "Yes" or
"Probably" or "I think so" and meet the eligibility
criteria,
we have foster children who need you.
